i was really intrigued comparing don's decision to polarize his range by mixing up his bet sizing and patterns to level his oppoent where he flopped the straight in the first hand to situations where our villain expects us to have a balanced polarized range.

now that i've thought about it i can see why potting can be dramatically better in those spots where we think our opponents thinks we have the nuts or nothing. since we're trying to get our villian to do the opposite of what he would of done if he could see our cards so potting can apply maximum pressure to ensure more folds and can ensure maximum gain when we get payed off.

In the last hand the opponent went for a 3 bet bluff on the river without any blockers.. a very risky play without a strong read. This means that he felt Don's line wasn't consistent with how someone would play the nut flush if he really had it and I tend to agree. Wouldn't leading the river be the best play with a flush given the turn was checked through and you wouldn't expect the opponent to bet the river for you very often, but might call with worse?

Great review, Phil. Has Don given you any feedback on your analysis? I would love to hear/read his thoughts on those lines too. Again, casting a vote for videos on whatever game you feel like doing. They are always great, and I play both games. I do think the edge in PLO is larger right now, and gaining perspective on that game probably has more value, $ wise. But Hold 'em vids are great too. Focusing on whatever you are feeling at the time seems to be the best recipe for a great vid. Thx!

Thanks for the feedback guys. Don didn't say much other than "I agree" for the most part.

I find it sad that Phil is concentrating almost exclusively on PLO now. I have a feeling that i am not alone with this opinion.

If you back look at my last 10 videos, it's been pretty even between NL and PLO.

Out of your last 6 videos, there was only 1 NL vid and 1 where you play NL and PLO. I was just scared by the rapid increase of the density of PLO material. Tbh, i was already contemplating to learn PLO, just because of the available PLO content at bluefire.

These are probably the best videos because you probably cover more interesting spots in these then you would in even a 4 tabling 5/10 xx video and get more time to talk about each hand in depth. I'm sure most of us have a good handle on general pre and post strategy which diminishes the value of a regular video and if someone doesn't there is plenty of videos on that already. Obviously, you won't want to be doing this type of video all the type though as it would be get boring.

In the hand where Don hero calls...
    29 Jun 2010 at 11:11pm
In the hand where Don hero calls the river with his pair of jacks, I think it's unfair to say that the villain should be checking value hands to Don because Don's range is polarized between missed and made draws. Even tho this polarization does exist here, Don could easily have a number of pairs (in combo with the draws he's likely to have) that could find hero calls after all the flop draws missed. What's more, if the villain does check river, it stinks of the check-to-call (u talked about)

cont... so if the villain gives Don any credit, he'll know that Don won't auto bet air and is likely to check back hands with weak showdown value (given the pot odds, he can't expect the villain to fold anything but air after checking the river...and a lot of the time villain would bet with air)...i know this is a bit of a ramble...but if my line of thought does makes sense then...against a thinking player like Don, the villain should be betting thin for value not trying to check to induce

Enjoyed the vid, as a lot of others too. Herocalls are always sweet, and I appreciate the one in the last hand. However, I thought there was one thing that should have been commented on. You went through the worries of him bluffing with worse, but I do think that there was smaller chance here than other times can be the case, since villain was in pos and would very often check behind hands that beat KK (but are not good enough to value-bet).
