Couple of questions: 1. How do you re-evaluate your constant 3-betting strategy in light of his adjustments? I think most HU regs would typically start to cut back on their junk 3-betting range and try to capitalise on their light 4-betting by sticking mainly to hands they can 5-bet for value, is this an ok thought process? 2. How do you rate how he adjusted to your PF game? As a very loose hypothetical, how would you have played if you were in his shoes? Awesome video, thanks.

My hands for those interested: 1. First 4-bet was K6s v Phil's 92c. 2. My raise of his K8d donk was Q6s for top 2. 3. Had K8h when Phil had K9s in the 3betpot. So yeah he had me crushed pre. :P 4. v Phil's A3o my intention was to check back turn repping weakness on a 2 flushed board and then overbet river to get hero call from his AK/AQ high or 88/77 type hand but he binked the 3 and obv his c/c check and then overbet lead line made no sense so i called :(

Fantastic video Phil. Love the HU series, and particularly interesting at these (relatively) lower stakes which are more relevant to my game.

ya, AQo felt like a big mistake, you put him down as a 2nd level thinker but even a 2nd level thinker do know that a insta snap jam on the river like that stinks weak hence weighting his hands towards the low flushes and the straight/set imo. But then again, im just a bumhunter.

On the AcQx hand you decided to call the turn...it seems to me that with your given logic that he's going to barrel his air at a high frequency on club and non-club rivers shoving the turn seems to be the better option. The problem is that he doesn't have enough air combos remaining in his range to profitably (or very profitably) call his river bet on blank rivers and there are more of those than hits for your hand. If he's folding 10 7 or a weak king possibly, don't you have to shove turn?

Snamuh, I didnt think he was 4betting enough to justify me changing my strat too much. He was still folding enough that 3betting junk was profitable. Since he was starting to 4bet more and not calling often, I need to polarize my 3betting range a bit. 3betting hands like QTs becomes a big mistake against people who rarely call and who 4bet with a decent frequency. Your thought process is good, and would be correct if he were 4betting recklessly and calling often. However, he continued to...

...fold enough for me to keep the aggression up. If I were in his shoes, I wouldve called a lot of 3bets, and 4bet a ton, especially once we were 150+ bb deep. After calling 3bets, I'd keep in mind that my opponents range is weak and polarized, and I'd make moves on a lot of boards, depending on how often my opponent was cbetting and rebluffing.

treys, I think your logic is pretty good, but your assumptions are wrong. The main reason to shove the turn is to fold out better hands. I don't think he is playing a weak King this way often at all. I think his range is pretty polarized on the turn, so most of his hands that are better than mine are very strong hands and will call my shove.

I am exhausted and may be just brainfarting here, but the A3 shove math... your effective stack size was much smaller than your "almost 2100." He had like 1500 left and there was 790 in the pot. Not trying to nitpick, but wanting to be corrected if I am way off here. Seems like an even better shove than you mentioned; but I like your stop and go even more (I call in spots like this, when I think the villian will put me on high cards and call with a pair, but will checkfold scary flops).

I agree with what you said Phil, I think he rarely has a king or 10 7 with this line but they seem like fringe hands to help a case for shove. If we shove 600 and get called by a strong hand we should have like 30% so we lose 250 of that compared to calling. But his bluffs outplay us about 65% of the time on the river (I guess I'm asking how to quantify this mathematically it seems like we need to take the perceived percentage of his range that are bluffs versus what we lose when he bluffs....

us successfully versus unsuccessfully. then add on the percentage of his value range on the turn that can check fold the dangerous rivers where we would've had that extra 600 by shoving our 30% equity and hitting. Can you give me a rough guess of what you'd estimate these percentages to be and the mathematical steps, and/or any other thoughts about the hand?

    26 Aug 2009 at 3:19am
ok...so if he's bluffing (and either actually ahead of us or behind but still folding to turn shove) we open him up to: .65*760=494 (he wins)- .35*620 (he loses shove)= 277 at say 20% (sound reasonable?) of his overall range giving him 55 in equity. he would need to check/fold rivers that we hit less than 1/3 of the time (1/3 of the 620 we would've gotten from shoving=206) for calling to work out better than shoving. It seems like he could check/fold value easily more than that.

Is there a gap in logic in that mathematical breakdown (not including my perceived percentage of his overall bluff/value range or that he's going to bluff rivers when he is bluffing but just the mechanics of it), if it's alright do the percentages seem reasonable?

fwiw once that turn comes im pretty much jamming the river with nearly 100% frequency when i have air so i think raising me off this air is generally a mistake. however phil's bluff catcher is so weak here that some of my bluffs beat his A high so i think shoving turn has merit to get me to fold those but ud have to work out how often i have air that beats A high versus hands that call his turn shove and overall id say my range would be weighted to the latter such that he shouldnt shove turn and

ok so my assumption about you barreling air at a high frequency seems mostly correct (or hands that aren't air but couldn't call a turn shove and do beat a high like 10 7 or k5s once in a blue moon). i did work it out and when you have those hands you gain 277 (or thereabout) in equity on the hand when we let you in by calling. The issue becomes, can you find a check fold with a hand like kj, k8s, j8s, or even a set of 8's when a variety of clubs (or a 10 less likely) come off after we call?

Fwiw, I think that even if this hand is a shove in a vacuum having it in your calling range at least some portion of the time makes it much more difficult for yOur opponent to play the river on both scary and safe rivers; when he has both value and bluffs. Opponent would have to do a lot right to outweigh metagame benefits afforded by calling.

Hey, would you mind releasing a video playing PLO any stakes vs some LAGGGGGtards and maybe even HU? Thanks. I feel like it's a lot harder for me to build a range for a crazy lagtard player vs holdem. I just get in a lot of sick spots and i feel like playing tight is probably just making me lose ev.

thank you phil! i love learning how to adjust my thought process when playing someone from 5/10 as opposed to someone from the nosebleeds. my mind is opening on how different players have different ranges in particular spots. after watching this series i finally can say i am becoming a better poker player. only thing i hate is playing live poker with the fish that arent putting me on a range and they value bet hands that should be checking so i end up making mistakes. but thats ok

were you winning? Some of those calls made surprised me. To think a guy is bluffing every time he shoves i don't see how that is profitable. i definitely have to change the way i am playing. A lot of those re raises and aired flops i wouldn't bother betting and i saw how you took some pots down. Then other times i saw a raise and yo woudl fold with ace 4. Other time you went up against a 5 bet with ace 3 i don't get it.
