Thank you so much for the informative response. I checked my River call win %, it's 39,8. Other than that, I also tend to believe it is somewhat sample size related, since the last couple of sessions both my wtsd and w$sd numbers increased drastically. So, I will have an eye on that going forward. Thanks a lot again!

Posted to: Alan's 200NL Replay (4) Show Thread | Post Reply

All that being said, I do think there is something about my HUD and stat reads that pushes down wtsd. The betting part, I think, is ++EV. Lately I've been thinking more about if I'm folding too much vs aggression. Like if someone has a 24% bet river I'm never bluff catching. Or if someone has a 60% flop cbet and 60% turn cbet I'm giving up second and third pair hands/gutters/bd draws on the flop as I don't think their flop range is wide enough and they put too much pressure on the turn.

Posted to: Alan's 200NL Replay (4) Show Thread | Post Reply

I think you meant w@sd to be wtsd. 20 is really low. I'm generally on the low side, around 23-24. Like you I stab a lot and bet the river a lot and I think that's a big part of it. I do tend to give up on the flop relatively easily, but when I filter for all those spots my results are very good so it's working for me. Check out your river call win %, should be 38-46%. If you're higher than that you're folding too many river, which pushes down your wtsd. However, I'd not be too concerned yet. Wait for a bigger sample size. Your wwsf is excellent. Your w$sd is on the low side of reasonable given your high wwsf. Given that your w$sd is lowish it doesn't really provide much opportunity for you to see more showdowns and make me think it's sample size related more than anything. If it's an issue with your play it likely comes down to hand reading and being able to manipulate your opponents into doing what you want through bet sizing. The best players I work with are around 26-27 wtsd, 51 w$sd, 47-48 wwsf. Pretty sick, imo.

Posted to: Alan's 200NL Replay (4) Show Thread | Post Reply

Hi Alan,
I've been playing with your type of hud for a little bit now (about 30k hands) and it's really been gone fine so far. My stats are actually a little bit tighter than before (21/17), but maybe that's just sample size related. But what's really weird is that my showdown number is really really low (~20%). But I don't know why. I do a lot of stabbing and also quite some river betting. The river bets more offen get raised than called, so I have to fold those a lot. But at the same time, when I do call a river bet, it seems to be the losing play a vast majority of the time.
So is it sample size related or what changes can I make to get that number up?
My numbers: w@sd = 20 w$sd = 49 wwsf = 48
Thank you very much

Posted to: Alan's 200NL Replay (4) Show Thread | Post Reply

For the TT hand, what are your thoughts on betting something like $40 and calling it off? I feel like you get called by a bunch of A-highs, all pairs definitely still call you, and a bunch of air ranges might get induced to bluff; overall you get more value than by just check/calling?

Posted to: Colms vs. JP: HUNL Theory Show Thread | Post Reply

Your logic seems a little flawed on the first hand, well you explain the situation right, as you say villain will fold all straightor flush draws and 3x. On the basis villain is never folding a King and you beat most Qx you might as well just pot it or just under pot it, betting $8 into $11.75 makes no sense in this scenario vs this villain. .

Posted to: Neil's MicroStakes HH Review Show Thread | Post Reply

The math and motivation behind the defense strategy and wideness at various stack depths is probably the most revolutionary change today as opposed to several years ago. I'd love to see a brief video explaining it. I'm still pretty confused to how the BB can defend a range basically as wide as the button and not be leaking massive amounts of money due to the positional disadvantage.

Posted to: ColmsUM vs. KevinPangos $400 NL HU Show Thread | Post Reply

I think if someone were defending 95% against me I would consider folding or limping the bottom 5-10% of hands. Other than that, I don't think much adjustment is necessary. I definitely wouldn't switch to 3x'ing.

Posted to: ColmsUM vs. KevinPangos $400 NL HU Show Thread | Post Reply

Wow, I never thought defending 95% OOP vs a good player could work. In that case, does it even make sense to mr vs someone like that without being extremely deep? Let's say you're at 80-100bb vs a good player defending 95%, how would you adjust? mr less, limp some? 3x a 75% range? I'm especially interested how you'd deal with this kind of wide defense @ 50-70bb since a lot of guys buy-in around there.

Posted to: ColmsUM vs. KevinPangos $400 NL HU Show Thread | Post Reply

I have experimented with 3betting it and personally didn't find I liked it very much. However, I'm aware of a couple high stakes players that do 3b hands like Q3o and I definitely think it's perfectly fine.

I do not have enough of a sample size to know if my results 3betting it are better because I simply have not 3bet that hand enough.

Posted to: ColmsUM vs. KevinPangos $400 NL HU Show Thread | Post Reply

First, I just want to throw out there I wouldn't normally defend 85% against an opponent opening 80%. I'd prefer they are opening 95%+.

Basically the idea is that you're getting three to one odds to call the minraise. You don't have to realize an extremely high percentage of your equity with these hands for calling to be > folding.

Against an equally skilled player opening 90% OTB, I would probably defend (just a guess) 80%. When the two best players in the world play each other, they will both be 2x'ing 100% and they will both be defending 85%+. In fact, Ben Sulsky defends 95% in the BB. Hand values run linearly toward the bottom in NLHE so if a player in the BB thinks he has an edge, there is no reason to for him to not defend 95% if he thinks he can defend 80% profitably as there is basically no difference in the values of these hands. It's hard for me to determine whether Ben thinks he has an edge against his opponents or if he thinks it's a theoeretically sound play, but if Ben is defending 95%, surely defending 80-85% can't be terrible. However, if you are not really damn solid postflop, you're just losing yourself more money by defending wide.

As far as the HU videos from a couple of years ago on Leggo/DC/etc, they are simply outdated and incorrect. I mean no disrespect to the makers of those videos and they would probably agree with me. I personally also have a couple videos on DC that are extremely outdated and at this point they are just hilariously not good in my opinion because poker has come a long way in that time.

Posted to: ColmsUM vs. KevinPangos $400 NL HU Show Thread | Post Reply

Also, instead of calling something like Q2o, have you experimented with 3-betting (I know it's a pretty crap hand for it)? How do your database stats look for hands like this? What is the expectation compared to folding?

Posted to: ColmsUM vs. KevinPangos $400 NL HU Show Thread | Post Reply

Thanks for the feedback. Still, how did you start to play this wide or decide that it should be better vs someone like your opponent playing ~80% OTB.

Let's say you're playing against an equally skilled player that opens 90% OTB @100bb. Do you think it's best to still defend 85%? Basically, what is the theory behind this and would you expect this to be best if the 2 best HU players are facing each other for instance? I know for sure that a couple of years ago on Leggo, DC and other sites most of the HU videos had people defending ~50-55% vs minraises.

Posted to: ColmsUM vs. KevinPangos $400 NL HU Show Thread | Post Reply

I think playing 85% OOP could be a mistake for most players. Playing something like 65-75% is easier to play profitably because it just becomes so much easier to balance the amount of air you have in different spots because your overall hand range is stronger. It also allows you to check/call down a little bit of a tighter range which in general just makes your life easier. I wouldn't recommend defending 85%+ unless you're going to take the time in CREV or poker stove to figure out how much you need to be defending on flops/turns/rivers on different runoffs. I do think something like 65% is probably better for a lower stakes player that's a little less capable of properly balancing his ranges postflop.

I do think it encourages some players to play me more often as they view it as a mistake to defend this much. I also think a lot of players react poorly to it because they don't realize the additional air it can put in my range in some spots where they probably need to be calling a bit more against me in comparison to your average opponent.

I don't really play that shallow but basically my defend range has to tighten because the button's opening range has to tighten as well. I'm guessing opening 100% for 2x isn't optimal at 20 BBs, and I certainly wouldn't defend this wide against a tighter opening range. With that said, I would think my positional disadvantage would be less with shorter stacks, so I would still defend fairly wide. At 50 BBs, I basically defend the same range unless they play tighter on the button.

It's important to realize that my defending strategy is very related to their button strategy. If you were to defend 85% of hands against someone opening 60% of hands for 2x, you could be burning money.

Posted to: ColmsUM vs. KevinPangos $400 NL HU Show Thread | Post Reply
