    BB Defending Ranges
    11 Aug 2012 at 4:16pm

Hi all. I'm Steve, a 6max reg and HU fish.

The video pros seem to know exactly which hands are profitable vs different size opens (perhaps from huge db samples vs other regs). Does anyone have these ranges or an idea of which hands are on the borderline, e.g. KXo's? I know ranges aren't static but when we're talking about facing 50% + opening ranges there are ofc hands that are always losing bb > cost of folding.

I've seen some HS videos on other sites where defending any two suited vs a min open at 6m (with the sb subsidy) was recommended. Any thoughts?

I generally defend any suited or any connected vs a min raise as a rule. If the player is fishy enough and I think I can get paid off or make plays post flop I'll just defend any 2. Keep in mind that hand reading is much more important when you have a deeper stack to pot ratio. Some of my semi junky hands I'll 3b as well, especially if they play straightforward post flop or fold to a lot of 3b.

Against players that are good a lot of the above goes out the window, and I dislike playing out of position. I actually usually try to sit to the *right* of the good players at the table, as then I get to play in position on the btn vs the players that are better, and normally have position on the fish anyways.

Thanks for the response dude but I'm after something more substantial.

The sitting to the right thing is really bad though. Money flows clock-wise. 5 hands outta 6 the good player has position on you. You'll still want to be opening a decent % of hands before the BTN and good players 3b IP.

To be clear, 2 to the right of a good player is prefered. Most of my hands are played on the CO or BTN where I have position anyways.

@flakydorf - I see your point in the good player being OOP when you are on the button, but having the good player on your direct left also means that 5/6 hands you are out of position. If he's truly a good player, he will 3b you aggressively, especially when you are isolating the weaker player. Additionally a good player will give you more resistance when attacking his blinds. Overall, I think your logic is flawed.

That being said, if it works for you, it works.

In regards to OP, as you mentioned yourself ranges are not static. There are many variables that decide whether or not you should defend your your BB. The basic strategy is to counter your opponent rather than focusing on your holecards. If villain steals wide, but folds to 3b's, technically you can 3b him with ATC. (vs a 3x steal, you need villain to fold 66,66% to break even if you 3b to 9x. Also knowing your opponent's post-flop tendencies should also adjust your range. If he gives up easily, you can defend very wide.

Since it sounds a little like your searching for specific hands, the best option is to look at your opponent's BTN steal range (remember, BTN 1st raise, not BTN PFR), and key it into PokerStove/Equilab and see how different hands do vs certain ranges.

    Hope this helps :)
