Thought process up to 50NL through any hand start to finish.
As I am moving up to 100 NL shortly I wondered if some experienced players could tell me if I need to add anything in my though process when moving up to 100NL or take anything out as it might be a waste of time?
Here goes:
Dealt whole cards – “who’s left to act, tight or loose”, stack sizes, hand strength relative to position ECT.... pre flop I am fine with.
I think that a lot of situations pre flop and on the flop are so close E.V that it can’t be a massive mistake in some situations either way.
Post flop: is this the type of flop I need to c-bet (wet or dry) – how many players in the pot- will i be likely to be ch/raised, before making the c-bet “Samos golden rule” what will I do if I am re-raised, if I am unsure, I should not make the bet.
I also add into that big pot big hand, small pot small hand for bet sizing.
Playing the turn and river is the most important streets for me as I think players make the biggest mistakes and most profit is won or lost on these two streets.
I also try to commit to an answer, if a certain type of card comes on the turn, will I shut down on a certain type of card, or will I fire again on a certain type of card + is he likely to fold?
How big a pot do I want to play against villains range?
Do I want to look to pot control with this type of hand?
If not – bets size – how much to bet to make it easy to make a river bet easy for villain to call all in.
Am I committed if ch/raised + Samos rule if raised what am I going to do?
- If I have a medium strength hand that I think is ahead of his range I am also committing myself to either
- Bet - fold
- Bet - call
- Check – call
River- I think this is the hardest street to play and most vulnerable for mistakes.
- If I make a bet on the turn setting up for an all-in bet on the river all I am concentrating on is my timing for the bet, not too quick and not to slow.
- If I have a medium strength hand that I think is ahead of his range I am also committing myself to either
- Bet - fold
- Bet - call
- Check – call
Finally asking myself this question – once i put him on a hand or a tight range, how much will he call for a value bet, because it’s only a value bet if called correct?
If villain folds it has no value on the river and there for would be more + E.V to check and let villain bluff or thin value bet.
I play 50NL and try to use this every hand I play and its starting to become second nature the more I play, I have written it down as I live in Spain and no one here plays poker near me, so I have no one to talk poker with, so the forum is all I have, so it would be great if someone who plays 100NL & up, could tell me if I need to add more things in my thought process or need to take some out as it will waist time?
Sorry it’s a bit long.
Thanks Jason.

I think you are on the right track, and just the fact that you are considering all of these things each hand will take you a long way. I play 50NL, 100NL and 100PLO HU right now. One of the big things I try to think about before making a bet is the simplest, but most often ignored. Why am I making this bet? What do I want to accomplish? By asking this question it often has the cascading effect of causing you to run through other important factors like opponent tendencies, stack sizes, goals for the hand, etc.
Good luck when you decide to move up. The most important thing to remember is to play exactly the same way you are playing now. If your style is beating 50NL it will beat 100NL. The adjustments you need to make will become apparent as you gain experience.

Thank you for your feedback, I feel allot more confident about moving up now, I am looking for a coach for 100nl+ if you’re interested? I don’t know if it’s the right thing to ask on the forum, or if there is some rule about it.
Thanks Jason

Hey there Iropedonks. Looks like you've got a thorough thought process in place. I'd like to make a suggestion that I think is good for your game and growth as a player. Many analytical players try and apply a structure to their game, or look for a solution. This is something that affects many people who read books, and then find 2+2 etc. I fell into this and the first 3 years of my poker career, looking for a solution, outside, to other people.
My suggestion to you is to watch Dr Giggy's vids on reads, and on playing really loose (giggy super loose). And PBJaxx's calling all buttons. Then I suggest that you play $5 NL for about 1k hands, 2 tables, and try and play 100% of hands, mainly raising and 3 betting, and see how opponents react to your image, and then try and exploit it. I know this may sound weird, but I think you'll learn a lot by trying things foreign and outside of your normal approach to your 'game.'What you take from that will open your mind on how to exploit image at $100, and how to exploit and adjust to the regs and noobs at that level. This will enable you top be more creative, and have more tools in your poker tool belt.
Best of luck, let me know how the experiment goes if you do it!P.S. I know you probably wont take my advice, but if you do, i promise it will help you a LOT.
PPS here's more reason to do it:
