5 PostsNL50 HU cash - Should I call the turn against an unknown?
Hi guys, just started playing HU cash. THis is a hand from my 2nd session.
This is hand 15. I've pretty aggressive from position, but have also limped a couple of buttons as well to see how he'd react (so out of 7Buttons; I've limped 2 and raisd 4 and folded 1). He raised me (where I folded) and has checked.
Oop I've been quite passive.
My villain is quite tight oop. He has also been 'tightish' from the button. He has only raise about 2 or 3 buttons and folded the rest. Iguess in my mind he is a tag. In his mind; he probably thinks a little loose; and a little aggressive
So I'm BB in this hand:
STACKS:
HERO: $52.70
Villain: $47.00preflop dealt Ac8c
Villain raises to $1.50; hero calls $1
Flop: As Ts 6d; pot is $3
hero checks, villain bets $2; hero calls $2
I thought if I lead out; I'd fold alot of hands out cause in my mind at the time - I had an impression he was 'weak-tight' and folding out way too many hands that he would've c-bet with. So I elected to c/call. Looking at this hand now -> it might have been best to lead out. I also elected to c/call to see if he understood the idea of c-betting. The other reason I elected to c/call was I would not have known what to do against a 3-bet on the flop.
Turn: As Ts 6d 7h; pot is$7
hero checks, villain bets $5; hero calls $5
I don't like my call. I'm assuming he bluffs a low % of the time (Maybe 10. Might be 20% as he may know I think he is tight). But I'm guessing he bets all of his top pairs and better... so really; I'm turning my hand into a bluff catcher/here. The main reason called because I wanted to get to show down so i could take a note on his tendency.

You also have a straight draw, folding this heads up seems too tight. You don't have enough info to fold your hand yet. Playing OOP is not easy - you can check call, but there are also other options. If you don't want to call a bet from this particular player, maybe it is better to lead into him on the turn? Maybe a 3 dollar bet?

to be frank, this is a quite an easy check call. Raising turns your hand into a bluff when you dont need to. You've only played 15 hands with villian, therefore your reads are pretty weak. Don't over adjust to only a few things you've seen. Even against a super nit, I'm calling this turn.
Folding isn't even close to an option.
Oh and donking is pretty meh too becuase you will be forced to fold a strongish type hand that hasa chance to improve.

he'll bet air FD, gutshot, mid pair air to get u off if u have mid pair or a higher mid pair than him, therefore calling there is correct. He'd most likely check back river if have air and fire when hit or bluff, don't like river call without reads though

Donking is often a good play against a player who seldom raises. You should just try different things, so that you don't always play a hand the same way.

I think that early in a match you should call the turn pretty much every time. He could be double barreling all kinds of hands. You will be behind to a better Ace some portion of the time, but your main objective early on should be getting to showdown to determine his betting strategy.

You should sometimes fold a hand, even if it could very likely be the best hand. Especially against maniacs. You can wait for a better spot to commit money. Poker is a complicated game, I am quite certain that being a good player involves folding the best hand sometimes and even know it! Why fold the best hand? Because you can wait a few hands and get all his money in a safer way. Why gamble with A10 preflop if villian is going to gamble in a few hands when you have better? So even against a person shoving all hands preflop you can sometimes fold strong hands and wait for a hand with better equity. So I would not say you should always call the turn. Sometimes just fold and keep variance low until you know your opponent. Especially against aggressive players who will bet the river too most times.

Ok cool; thanks for the responses so far. Idk about donking on turn for $3. I semi don't know what it accomplishes. But looking at it with fresh eyes I think c/call is probably the best play. Alright here is the river. I guess one reason why I thought c/call was a little subopitmal was that it put me in a spot where the A8 can only be a bluff catcher by the river; and have very little show down value against value betting range. So I guess the question I should've asked in the Original Post is; if we are going to call the turn; should we call this river too?
RIVER: Ts As 6d 7h 5c (pot is $17)
Hero checks
Villain bets $12
Hero calls $12(in before someone says you should have a plan)

You have to know his river tendencies in order ot make the proper decision. In a vaccuum vs an unkown, this is a fold. If he fires three with like any pair, then this is a call. You have to be right pretty often to make this call profitable. Folding is... dare i say it.... "standard"
The reason i do not mind a call: you learn a lot about an opponent in a HU match when you make this call. If he bet AQ all three streets here, then you need ot note that. It could mean A) hes likely going to bet three streets of value with a premium hand that made a pair. 2) he bets the turn thinly for value with such hands that in reality dont have much equity vs a calling range.
you get ot learn how thinly hes betting th eriver and you can adjust by knowing you get mor eimplied odds on future hands.
