2.5/5€ live CG - getting value of bottom set

10 men 2.5/5€ live CG table, I have good TAG image (played at least 3-5+ times with everyone on the table except of 2 unknowns).

Stacks are 70-300BBs, mine is ~200BB.

I open 4x from UTG with 22 after like no raising a single hand for 2-3 orbits, get 5 callers, 120€ pot.

Board: T62cc

I check, 70BB weak older player leads 20€, get snap call (I put her immediately on a FD or 77-99 max) and then a raise to 70€ from a wild man, who was playing rather str8tforward that day.

Wild man could raise with air, any 10, any gutshot, any FD considering how weak the action was on the flop and given his last position in CO.

I tank half a minute and raise to 215€, wild man tanks, says "Set or what?", flips a 10 and folds (very unusual to him, since he is non-beleiver and would call at least 1-2 more streets).

Normally he would check turn and bet big/overbet river if checked to him all 3 streets with any 2pair+ or complete air and bet smaller with one pair hands including bottom pairs. The lady I've put on FD is rather very cally too.

Very simple hand, but I think about it over and over again, how it could have been would I flat on the flop and check call/check raise turn on safe non flush card instead.

Thoughts?

Posted to: 2.5/5€ live CG - getting value of bottom set Show Thread | Post Reply

I like trying to get into the pot cheaply with small pairs. Your looking to hit a set and get paid off and if they fold that often to three bets then there is a good chance they will only enter the pot with a hand that has you dominated so why get more money in when there is a good chance your a 4-1 dog? And by three betting you end the hand before giving yourself a chance to hit a homerun flop which IMO is the biggest reason to play small pairs. Also if they have a good enough hand they can 4 bet big then what do you do? Now you have lost more money by three betting and your not even seeing a flop with a hand to potentially bust them.

Posted to: 3 betting small pairs in position as a bluff Show Thread | Post Reply

I rarely 3bet small pairs in position as a bluff. As a general rule of thumb they are going to be profitable to play in position in most situations because they can flop extremely strong hands, and dont suffer much from making second best hands. Hands which flop more marginal hands, but arent worthless in case they are called like A9o or 85s, tend to be better candidates to 3bet bluff with vs an opponent who folds to a very high percent of 3bets preflop. If the situation was such that you couldnt profitably call, such as multiple players with very high squeeze percentages left to act, 3betting would be fine.

Posted to: 3 betting small pairs in position as a bluff Show Thread | Post Reply

But youre only playing your small pairs to set mine cheaply as possible V this TAG player you know his strong so why 3bet? If you hit your set you will get max value, if you 3 bet this TAG player he might fold and you win the min or he 4bets and youhave to fold, just puts you in a tricky situation because his a tight player.

Just my thoughts.

Posted to: 3 betting small pairs in position as a bluff Show Thread | Post Reply

I have this question too, and it would be great if one of the BFP coaches would give some input.

Mariano, I'm definitely not qualified to answer, but I'll share my thoughts anyway: It really feels like we're wasting the hand. Everytime we 3bet and get 4bet the villian had something he'd probably lose some money with post-flop and we'll have to fold and miss our set-mining opportunity. I know we pick up a lot of money the X% of the time the villain folds, but we probably have pretty good equity in those pots just by virtue of being in position and the villain having a marginal hand.

Last point against 3betting: When someone opens and we flat, it gives the blinds (especially the BB) good odds to call and now we're multi-way in position with a decent chance to flop a monster. This is particulary true if either or both of the blinds are loose/passive.

But like I said, I'm not really qualified and would definitely like some better players to chime in.

Posted to: 3 betting small pairs in position as a bluff Show Thread | Post Reply

I have a general 3 betting theory question here. It involves 3 betting small pairs in position against late position TAGs who fold to 3 bets a ton(more than 60%). I know there is a lot of value in calling and using your positional advantage post flop but is there merit to 3 betting your small pairs as a bluff from time to time, if you feel like your opponent is a strong post flop player and you won't be able to make much money off him even in position by just calling? maybe mix it up between calling and 3 betting? any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated..thanks!!

Posted to: 3 betting small pairs in position as a bluff Show Thread | Post Reply

I would certainly work on finding your opponents tells if you plan to play live. While it doesn't hold true for everybody, at the lower limits it is *very* helpful. Also, as a new player I'd consider checking out twoplustwo.com, as there is often very good strategy there. For your bankroll I'd probably play 1/2 or 1/3, and do my best to game select.

Posted to: Strategies for No Limit Hold'em Show Thread | Post Reply

strategies are key and I'm farely new. I've purchased all the dvd's available on ebay and recently found out about this site while wathing the 2012 1M buy in game. To date, I've played about 2500.00 and have broken even just recently. I like live action and bore easily online.

Recently, the game has gotten easier and I see the table differently. I love this game and want to make a living out of it and am currently working with a limited bankroll of only 5K. Any suggestions? I respect the game and welcome suggestions.

Posted to: Strategies for No Limit Hold'em Show Thread | Post Reply

I guess the big read is how thinly he's been betting for value on the river, right? I don't play heads up much, but I watch the videos and try to get in y'alls heads.

For his perspective, though, if he's thinking about it, your play through the turn looks amazingly strong. The flop hits a flatting range pretty well, and then you c/r it and bet the turn as if unimpressed by the K. His call on the flop and turn seem to cap his range as something that wants to show down but not get stacks in yet.

When he bets the river, though, he's saying he doesn't mind getting ch/raised, even though you've shown strength and should have the better range here, right? So he's either got a missed draw or something incredibly strong. Problem is, some of his air beats your air.

I suppose the real read to get here is whether he plays strong hands fast, or if he tries to give you rope to hang your aggro self when he's sitting on a monster. The bet size is right on the line. He might bet smaller if he wanted a crying call. He might bet bgger if he wants you to fold. This size is pretty ambiguous and leads me pretty quickly into 'never go against a Scicilian when death is on the line' territory.

Fold is obviously ok since you have crap. Call is bad, I think. In theory, because he only called the turn he should never have a hand that can take a raise on the river, but it depends on how trappy he plays with big hands, how often you've ch/folded the river so far, how often he's value bet thinly so far, how long the match has been going on, etc. Riase may or may not be good, but it's probably good for meta-game.

Does any of that sound reasonable?

Posted to: 200nl HU - Who wants to be a hero? Show Thread | Post Reply

Doesn't sound like your coach knows what he's talking about. You had it right in the first 3/4's of your post.

The only thing I disagree with is flatting small pairs to try to keep more sets in your range for the times villains want to barrel. You aren't going to get barreled nearly as much when your opponent is opening from the BTN since his range is going to be wide and will not often flop enough equity to want to barrel.

If he's minraising and you are in the BB that's a different issue though, never fold a pair to a minraise.

3bet more from the SB in general than the BB, most particularly when you have a squeeze happy player in the BB. If the BB is pasive then calling can be fine though.

When you are in the BB, you cap the action so it's slightly better to have a wider calling range as you are guaranteed to see a flop.

Posted to: playing blinds oop w/SC and Axs PLEASE HELP!!!! Show Thread | Post Reply

I like the way you played the first one. It's pretty much a suicide bluff from villain since as you can see, every player in the thread just thinks "oh he's good so we have to call because we are at the top of our range". It's like, they heard this from videos of better players saying it over and over and over so they just auto reply with that advice without actually understanding how narrow your value range is on the turn and how often you will actually shut it down on the turn or river with your bluffs.

The second one was an atrocity though. If you are going to bet the turn you are pretty much bluffing. It's just way way way too thin for value. If you are bluffing, you need to size your bets larger on all streets. If you don't want to bluff, you should just shut it down on the turn and hope to get your hand to showdown.

I'll probably get crucified for this, but I think the advice given by the BFP "pros" is pretty bad.

Posted to: Two difficult spots.

Pretty sure you are overestimating how frequently hero can have Axcc. He can have like... A2-A5 sometimes, but even those will raise the flop way more frequently since if villain is betting it, it's almost never to give up on bricks. Sure he willl sometimes try to rep our hand when we hit it, but everytime we miss we are still going to have to fold.

Posted to: 3/6 Interesting river spot vs a decent reg Show Thread | Post Reply

You beat only a few hands. JT, Q8, J8, 54. It's silly to consider calling against such a narrow bluff range. You are better off c/c when you have KcTx in this spot.

I think so many people make the mistake (myself included) of being worried about getting exploited in spots where there are only a few hands in villain's range that we actually can beat when the reality of the situation is, dude, you have Q high and this is 200nl. If you can't find a better spot than this, you probably should be playing lower stakes.

It's also quite reasonable for him to have a 7. Just fold.

Also, wtf, since when is 200nl mid stakes?

Posted to: 200nl HU - Who wants to be a hero? Show Thread | Post Reply

I think if villain has a better hand he may turn it into a bluff.

Raising is probably going to be marginally profitable but add balance and make you harder to play against. He has to give you credit for having a hand unless he has AK at the minimum when you raise. IF you have a dynamic where you have been making bluffs with similar equity and shown down, I don't like this move.

You have SPR on he river of 3:2 and a checkraise is probably gonna look stronger than a donkbet all in on this river.

Posted to: 200nl HU - Who wants to be a hero? Show Thread | Post Reply

playing blinds oop w/SC and Axs PLEASE HELP!!!!

hi guys if there are any pros that can answer this question that would be much appriciated. I want to know what makes calling a steal profitable in the blinds with a suited connector and maybe how low should i go plus maybe Axs. my coach told me its only good to call with suited connectors in the blinds if they c bet to much but i tend to disagree. Ill state what i think there are boards that the chck back to much on and tehre are boards that they c bet to much on. I think the boards they check back to much i should donk bet a ton and rep bigger hands and the boards that they c bet to much i should CR a lot. But i feel there is a medium like say the guy folds to 3 bets to much like 80% or even 70% i should call with the primiums and CR him a ton along with my broadway type hands while i also thnk those Axs hands should be 3 bet as a bluff and be very unballanced until he figures it out. but say if he calls 3 bets to much i would 3 bet with a thinner value range but than maybe be unballanced in calling with Axs or suited connectors but im not sure if that leaves to much of a gap of margin of error. hpoefully i make my thoughts clear enough. But maybe i should play a 3 bet or fold game vs the guy who calls to much. Can anyone tell me if this will be profitable the way i said i will do it. i feel like i do well but my coach made me stop doing it and i wanted to get oppinions from the rest of you as i only play 4 tables so i can focus on playing the best i can.
1 more thing if im CR a lot i felt that playing any PP might show a profit vs guys who barrel to much or guys who might play back and kinda for ballance so i can show up with more sets so i cant get sets in more likly. thanx

Posted to: playing blinds oop w/SC and Axs PLEASE HELP!!!! Show Thread | Post Reply

Hand 2 is a fold but I disagree with checking the river as more of a metagame/image consideration than a combinatorics.

Hand 1 is certainly a tough spot but assuming youre correct in thinking the villain is good then we need to be calling here most of the time. Your range for barreling this river is pretty wide(if he assumes you bet alot of your overcards on the turn) and will pick up some thin value with the K alot of the time. I would need to know more info on both players but his line is so good to get folds from AA, KQ, QQ that I think we definitely need to be calling with AJ. I find that too many players try to turn 88 into a bluff on the river without considering how strong your TURN range actually is.

On the other hand, if you feel that his turn range is tighter given his consideration for the strength of YOUR turn range, the river is a much closer decision and probably is a fold.

Some posters have mentioned that they prefer c/c'ing this river and I absolutely disagree there - we can't make a sub-optimal play for the sole reason of being scared of making an incorrect decision. One alternative, however, to bet-guessing is to overbet the river. He should still call with the range of hands we are trying to extract value against and it may limit the number of times he c/jams so that we can fold comfortably vs the shove. It is a theoretically incorrect play(imo), but can produce favorable results against the right villain in practice.

Posted to: Two difficult spots.

Hand 1 I'm fine with betting the river, but as previous posters have pointed out there is merit to checking the river as well, so those two options are very close for me.. as played its a b/f on the river imo.

Hand 2 I think a river bet is way too thin, I cant think of anything in villains range that is worse than AK and can call 3 times, I like a c/f on the river given the read that villain wont value bet thin.

Posted to: Two difficult spots.

Hand 1: Only folding vs. the nittiesttttttt of players. I think check/calling the river might save some money for the few times he has KJ or 67dd etc.

Hand 2: I'm folding. Raise pre is fine and cbet flop is fine. Depending on opponent I am check-calling/folding the turn and river though.

Posted to: Two difficult spots.

Hand 1:

Given the opponent, I think a check/call line on the river would be the best option. It opens up the opportunity for him to bet worse for value or turn SD hand into bluff (QJ, JT - TT-88), minimize loss when you have 2nd best, and not be faced with a vomit decision if he shoves over your river bet.

As played, I think we have to reluctantly call it off and vom when he flips up the 76dd

Hand 2:

Again given the opponent, I think we have to shut it down on the turn and ch/call or even ch/fold. He's going to be flatting a pretty tight range UTG+1 and your read that he "rarely plays thin" really bugs me when he calls flop and turn. He's pretty nutted here (Nut flush, set, straight not likely as he's not flatting JTo-one heart PF and prob not calling flop with JTs non-hearts-- he's not value raising 2 pr here either).

Shut it down on turn. As played, gotta fold river.

RA

Posted to: Two difficult spots.

I don't play anywhere near that high so take it for what its worth, but hand 1 I think you have to consider a call at least. The backdoors getting there really stinks to high heaven though.

Hand 2 is a fold as played in my opinion. You obviously don't look like you'd fold given the odds, and I don't see many villians making this move without having you beat. Out of curiousity is that a standard river bet given board texture / positions? It seems pretty thin to me, but once again I don't play that high. I'm actually curious to see what some of the pros think.

Posted to: Two difficult spots.
