    High stakes, no experience...
    9 Jan 2012 at 5:51am

I am for a couple of months now, never had any experience of poker before... doing alot of reading and watching of training vids etc. I am parachuted into a group who mostly plays high stakes ... players are 'good' as Iam!!... am doing well money wise and winning most of the time but need to improve my game, can't do it with bad players, am not interested to play in casinos or... (have some restrictions) so how could I improve my game? through online games? any other advice please?

Never had any experience and are already playing highstakes?  That will not end well.  If you have run good and made some money, I would set that aside and really study the game hard to get a great grasp on all the intricate elements to the game.  Kind of an ass-backwards thing to play high stakes then ask where you should start, so that is why I am leaning towards telling you to quit until you know wtf you are doing as in poker it is easy come, easy go.

There are plenty of videos here on bfp that will definitely help you out.

There is no rush to the highstakes.  Take your time, study, learn, and grow as a player.  As mentioned many places elsewhere, I feel the best way to learn poker is to talk to other really good poker players and discuss hands and tricky spots that may have come up in a recent session.  To see how they would play something different will open your eyes to many plays you might not have previously thought of and elevate your game to new levels. Good luck!

Watch videos, talk to players, get coaching, etc. Same as the others have said- jumping into high stakes action is not wise, winning is most likely just being on the positive side of variance. Use this as improvement capital and reinvest back into your game.

I completely agree with these other guys.  I think it's pretty important to find someone that is in the learning process and try to help each other progress.  It's much easier to learn the game with someone else so long as they are dedicated to it as you are.

Thanks, great advice... it is four months since i wrote that, I am still ahead (not that much though as I was) others are catching up and there are some good new players. I have developed a terrible habbit of chase-chase-chase... also wining at the start of the session but lose most of it towards the end... it has been happening again and again and again, any advice?

Get up and quit no shame in getting up from the tables.  Phil Ivey is great at this.  He will book a big win and be done.

I'd pay to have your experiences.  Basically I get super stuck early and always fight to break even or win a small around at the end.  Trust me, it is was worse this way :(

I take it the OP has got a sweet home game going with a lot of money flying around with plenty of rich fish?

If this is the case, then you really have it simple. Just get holdem manager, play at the microstakes (as fish there will be similar at the fish at your highstakes game), once you can own them. You willl destroy your home game.
