So much for getting Jungleman as an underdog at 2-1. As the first session went on, Durrrr ended up down a bunch. After that first session, me and jressle were talking and he was offering 1.1-1 to take Durrrr. I should've snap taken it, but I was trying to get 1.25-1. We ended up not making a bet. From what I understand, now the line is -210 if you want Jungleman. Oh well.

Poker for me has been pretty brutal lately. I think I'm breakeven over my last 80k hands at 200NL. The graph is pretty ridiculous- just up and down 10-15 buyins at a clip. If there's any comfort in it at all, it's that those 80k hands were played while I was 20-24 tabling, so it's only about 40 hours of play. Also, there's decent money in breaking even (VPPs, rakeback, milestones) when you're playing that kind of volume. So whatever I guess.

When I finally start playing again, I plan on either cutting down the tables or attempting to beat 100NL while 24 tabling. I'm not sure which. I know long term, I'd be better off playing fewer tables and trying to pay more attention, but I'm considering making a run for Super Nova Elite in 2011, and I wouldn't be able to do it if I'm not able to 20+ table the 6 max games. I've got a little time to think about that some more.

Otherwise I haven't been up to much. My broken foot is healing, but still hurts, and I'm still unable to surf. This continues to suck about as much as possible, since the surf has been spectacular for the Northeast lately. And with these hurricanes coming, tomorrow is set to have double overhead waves. While the surf is popping off tomorrow morning, I'll be at the doctor for my follow up appointment.

I hobbled to the beach this morning, and there were a couple guys out there with some shoulder high sets coming in. It's beautiful out.

It's my left foot that's broken, and my car is a six speed. Two weeks ago, I realized that the most painful thing I was doing for my foot was pushing my clutch. The most obvious solution would be to stop driving, but the most obvious solutions aren't always best. Instead, I've begun driving using only my right foot, 3 pedals, 1 foot. And I'm getting pretty damn good at it. Launches are very slow, but once I get into first gear, I'm golden. Slowing down quickly is also tricky, and I pretty much have just been braking and throwing it in neutral. I really have to jam it 'out' of gear sometimes though, as the transmission really seems to prefer to have the clutch engaged when coming out of gear. Hopefully I'm not damaging the car at all.

Keep ya posted.

Sociopaths FTW
Post Date: 27 Aug, 2010

I woke up this morning to durrrr and jungleman 5 tabling. Should be a sick match. If anyone wants to take durrrr and will lay 2-1, I will take jungleman. Leave me a comment or a PM on 2p2.

Speaking of 2p2, I was recently banned. I had put a link to my blog in the location field of my profile so that it appeared under my avatar everytime I made a post. As far as I know, it doesn't say I can't do that anywhere, and it actually let me put in a URL. So why not?

Soon after editing my location, I get a PM saying I've received an infraction of 25 points that will not expire for "linking to blog."

I was pretty irritated by this. I responded with:

"where does it say i cant do that? you couldve just asked me to remove it. go jump off a cliff."

I was instantly banned for a week. Most of you have probably been banned, but for those of you who haven't, what happens is that you can't even view the pages. It seems as though my IP was locked out from logging in or out, and from viewing any page at all. There was just a message in the middle of the screen saying that I was banned while the mod was "looking for a cliff to jump off of."

I'd love to say a hundred hateful things about this guy, but it seems as though he has the 'power' to prevent me from ever reading NVG again, so I'll refrain.

Speaking of internet nerd power trips, I'm reading "The Sociopath Next Door" and it's really fascinating (and disturbing). According to the psychologist author, 4% of the population have no conscience, and don't have the ability to feel guilt in any capacity, and don't have the ability to connect to other people. This results in manipulation and the exertion of power as a means of entertainment (like my 2p2 mod friend).

I really like books like this, fascinating non fiction. Before I got into "The Sociopath Next Door," I was about a third of the way into a fiction book that was "recommended" to me by Amazon, presumably by my old liking to Chuck Palanuik novels. The fiction I was reading was just boring me to death though, I had to quit it. If anyone has any non fiction must reads for me, please comment them.

Or better yet- send me the books on my twitter @runhotpoker. Speaking of twitter, does anyone know a spot where I can both promote my own twitter, and also add a bunch of other poker players? Let me know.

Broken Foot
Post Date: 26 Aug, 2010

I've had this dull pain in my foot for maybe three weeks now. Except that it isn't really dull anymore. It has been getting progressively worse every day, and now I'd call it a consistent, persistent, excruciating, throbbing pain.

I did go to the doctor and get it looked at and x rayed. I have a broken medial sesamoid bone in my foot. Which is pretty awesome not only intrinsincly, but also because its coinciding with the best surf I've seen this year.

I actually went to the doctor 3 days ago. The following day, I decided I was going surfing anyway, despite being told to stay off it. I wish I hadn't.

It hurts like fuck.

And I lost a bit at 200NL.

But I got twitter! Follow me here:

What About The Dogs?
Post Date: 21 Aug, 2010

So it turns out that I did jinx myself.

Following my last post, I picked up a small win, followed by a session where I smoked 9 buyins. A pretty shitty session indeed.

Losing is hard.

I didn't want to quit with a loss, but it just kept getting worse. The hardest thing is that I remain unsure about whether it was a bad run, or if my play went to shit. If there was a way that I could be sure I played well, and was just unlucky, I don't think the loss would bother me much at all. In fact, I think if I could somehow always know why I lost (bad luck or poor play), I would be so much happier playing poker. Oh well.

Anyhow, I've played 7 sessions since my blowout, and I've won in 6 of those 7. The one I loss I had was only half a buyin, and including the big loss, I'm back in the black since my last post.

Graph since last post:

Outside of poker, I'm just grinding out waves, surfing as frequently as there is any swell at all. Random story:

I eat lunch at the same spot at least 4 times every week. It's like a sandwich shop, but it's on the nicer side, and a sandwich and drink costs about $13. The other day while I was eating, other patrons came in with their dogs. It really annoyed me. I emailed the board of health as a result. Below is my email, and their response. I couldn't believe how quickly they actually sent someone there- it was within 48 hours of my email.

To Whom It May Concern:

XXX restaurant located at XXX, allows dogs in their eating establishment.

Today there were two dogs in the crowded eatery at lunch time. One was a smaller dog that a woman was holding at the table as if it were a child. The dog's name was Bo and it was barking and shaking persistently as its owner ate lunch. Workers in the establishment came over numerous times to pet the dog. The dog excitedly was licking all over their hands. It didn't appear as though the workers were washing their hands after handling the dog or having the dog's saliva on their hands.

Another dog was also walking around the eating establishment at this time, on a long leash. The first dog mentioned was not on a leash.

Please respond via email.

Thank you.

Response:

Good morning,

This email is in regard to your compliant at XXX.

Upon arrival, I spoke to the owner and he stated that non-service dogs come into the establishment all the time or eat in outside dinning area. Usually, he customer is asked to leave, but sometimes customers will still bring their dogs into the establishment in handbag. Owner stated that she know that non-service dogs should not be coming into the establishment. He will keep a log of non service dogs coming into establishment. He will continues to stop dogs from entering establishment as per converation with health department.

Seems like the Department of Health needs some help proofreading. Either that, or the agent was unsure as to whether the owner was a male or female.

I haven't seen any dogs in there since.

Last 5 Days
Post Date: 14 Aug, 2010

In the past 5 days, I've played 35K hands over 23 hours. I've played 14 sessions and won in 12 of them.

I've won 12 out of my last 14 sessions. 12. Out of 14.

Needless to say I'm very happy about this.

The discrepancy in the winnings summary doesn't account for the conversion of euros.

Plugging Along
Post Date: 10 Aug, 2010

I've been playing quite a bit of hands at 200NL lately.

I had started the month with 200k VPPs on Stars, and I think a reasonable goal is for me to reach 300K by September 1. I have 220K now, so 80K more at .5 VPP / hand, thats 160K hands over 20 days, or 8K hands per day. Hmmmmm, maybe thats not realistic. I'm not sure. I'll think some more about it.

After getting 7K hands in today, I ended up +10 buyins, which is always nice. I feel like I'm playing well, but I also feel like lately I'm giving up on hands too easily. I'm not spewing stacks left and right either though. It's a fine line I guess.

Recently I started messing around with this new thing called Twitter. I'm not sure if anyone's heard of it yet, but I'm looking for people who have entertaining tweets to follow. If you have any suggestions, please leave them in the comments.

One last thing, the latest Eminem album is pretty fucking amazing.

New Monitors Up
Post Date: 06 Aug, 2010

So I got my new monitors up and vertical alongside my 30". I must say it's pretty sweet. Pretty sweet indeed. I needed a second video card, and new stands for my Acer 20"ers, but it was well worth it.

Random story about how, um, some of our perceptions are different from others:

I'm out of bottled water and too lazy to go to Costco, so when I'm out for breakfast, I stop at a bodega to pick up some water. I automatically assume that the 1.5L Poland Spring is going to be the best value bottled water and pick it up. I get to the counter and it costs $3.50.

Out of curiosity, I ask the woman how much the small Poland Spring bottles are. She says $1.25, and I guess I maybe looked a little disappointed in my 'bargain' (but really didn't care much), since she followed up with "but that there (my 1.5L bottle) is like 7 or 8 of those."

7 or 8? Wow. I mean I could see if you didn't know that those little standard bottles are .5L, maaaaybe you could guess 4 of them to the big bottle. But 7 or 8?

Anyway, I politely said that it was exactly 3 times as big and that this one was 1.5L vs the .5L. She was politely surprised (or maybe didn't believe me).

Everything Was Going So Well
Post Date: 05 Aug, 2010

Two days ago I decided that there was still enough time for me to make Super Nova Elite for 2010. I had 200k VPPs and would need to get 800k more in 5 months.

I thought this was reasonable since, with all the 20-50 bb tables that run, I could play many tables of 200NL and up. I figured that if within 2 weeks I could exclusively be playing 400NL and up, and be like 40 tabling, I could do it.

So yesterday I set out to play 20k hands. I made it to 13k and was down $1200 before I quit. I was playing a mix of 200NL and 400NL, playing all tables except the deep ones. It's pretty doubtful I'd be stuck like that if I weren't playing so many tables, so I decided to abandon the idea of going for SNE.

A little later on, I felt like I should play some more, but wasn't feeling focused enough for 6m cash, so I fired up every MT SNG that was registering for about 10 minutes. I ended up playing 14 of them.

I played 7 18 mans, 3 27 mans, 3 45 mans, and 1 180 man. The buyins ranged from $12 to $114. I ended up winning 2 of the 45 mans, 5th in the other 45 man, 2nd in the 180 man, and I won the $114 (which was an 18 man).

Pretty sick run for a guy who hasn't played many SNGs since 2007 (read first blog post).

Today I think it's back to the 200NL grind though, and I'm going to try to focus a little more.

Also today, I'll be setting up my 3rd monitor. I have been running a 20" widescreen alongside my 30" for quite a while. But now, I will be setting up another 20" on the other side, and putting both 20's vertically. It's going to be sick. Here's my current setup.

I will post pics of the new setup when its done.

Keep ya posted.

Moving Along
Post Date: 02 Aug, 2010

I just finished the book, "Under the Banner of Heaven."

Amazing book. It's the story of the history of Mormonism intertwined with the story of a few Mormon Fundamentalists who murder their sister in law and baby niece.

The history of Mormonism is so fascinating to me. It really gives insight into how a religion can come about, and in this case there is concrete historical evidence of how it happened. (Since Mormonism is less than 200 years old, there were newspapers, etc, at that time. No such first hand documents from 2000 years ago would have made it through the Dark Ages untainted.)

I should mention that I have been called a fanatical athiest, and that may have something to do with how much I liked this book. Although maybe not, I think it was a New York Times Bestseller or something. (Also check out "The End of Faith", awesome book).

Leave a comment if you check it out.

Poker has been going well.

After my last post, I played some 100NL. I pulled in 6 buyins the following day. The day after that, I pulled in another 6. On the third day, after a session where I was +1, I decided it was time to get back on to 200NL.

I was up and down a bit, but finally got some momentum today, making 5 buyins at 200NL.

My game feels really good. I'm happy about it. I may even play some 400NL this weekend.

Keep ya posted.

Finally Got Some Momentum
Post Date: 26 Jul, 2010

So I've decided to get my ass back to grinding.

To bring all my faithful fans back up to speed:

  • I had actually made it back to MSNL, picking up 10 or so buyins my first day at 400NL (back in Spring 2010).
  • I lost a couple back, and dropped back down to 200NL.
  • I owned for a bit playing 12+ tables of 200NL.
  • I got owned for a 15 buyin downswing.
  • I tilted like this guy: www.youtube.com/watch
  • I dropped down to 100NL, lost, dropped down to 50NL and lost my face off.

After the smoke had cleared, I decided that I would make myself recover my losses from 50NL and 100NL before moving back up, even though I was still very properly rolled for 200NL.

Alas, I have finally recovered from my 50NL bloodbath, picking up nearly 10 buyins today. I think I've found a groove and anticipate being back at 200NL within two weeks.

It did take quite a while for me to get my money back from 50NL, but I hadn't been playing that frequently. I've been working quite a bit on my other projects.

Specifically, I've been working on search engine optimization for a website / service that I've been running since 2005. I don't want to get into it so much, but the time spent has been worth my while.

The first release of my FaceBook application is also nearly complete. The beta was originally scheduled for a May 12 release, but now I'm crossing my fingers for August 12. It kinda sucks, since I'm at someone else's mercy for their time- but that's how it goes if you have a partner with a 9 to 5.

Other than that, everything's cool. There's been a lot of days recently with decent surf, so that's cool.

I'm pretty embarrassed, but here's the Starting at the Bottom graph.

Keep ya posted.

Quick Update
Post Date: 21 Jul, 2010

I recently had a chance to finally surf Ditch Plains out in Montauk, NY. The spot is pretty sick. Unfortunately, though, the swell wasn't that big. Was a fun day nonetheless, and I was happy to finally get out there. It's a hike to get all the way out there though, and the traffic can be a bitch. Hopefully I'll make it out again soon.

I haven't really been playing much lately, but I did just take 3rd in a tourney with a field of 1300. It was like a $30 buyin, and the score was good for $3k. I plan on playing the Turning Stone $2.5k event in August and winning it though, so that will be nice. While I'm there, I also plan on winning like $10k at the live 5-10 NL that hopefully will be running.

The IRS had been hassling me for a while recently. For the past few years, Russ Fox (Leggo Poker) has been handling my taxes. The IRS contacted me almost a year ago regarding my 2008 filing, saying I owed an additional whole bunch of money. I forwarded the notice to Russ and he quickly wrote out a reply for me.

It took a while, but the IRS finally responded, this time with a "counter offer" of about 2/3rds of their original request. Again, Russ penned a quick response. Again it took a while, but the IRS finally got back to me, this time saying that the case was closed and I owed no additional money. What a huge relief that was.

Anyway, I just wanted to suggest Russ to anyone who gambles for a living. He obviously is more competent than the people at the IRS. He is super quick in addressing concerns, thorough, and his fees are extremely fair. I highly recommend him.

His Leggo Page is here:
